MulteLearn specialise in creating self-marking assessments. We believe that assessments should: be engaging for students
provide as much personalised feedback as possible
require the minimum effort for the teacher / tutor
be objective, fair and consistent
be possible both at school or workplace and at home / distance learning
present realistic and pedagogically sound questions
be accessible to all students
reveal weaknesses and reward knowledge
Multi-choice where only one of the answers may be selected
Often used combined with a rubric, from which the Student must select which combination of answers is correct. Multiple choice where one or more answers may be selected.
Some answers cary more weight and importance, so score more highly within a single question. So that students don't just tick ALL the boxes, a single wrong selection marks the whole question as wrong Text Answers where the student types a short answer into a box
we use these a lot to 'fill in the blank' and check both comprehension and spelling which is particularly important in the Sciences and Maths. Each answer can be a single word, phrase, formula or chemical symbol and can be Case Sensitive. So for the chemical element Sodium's symbol, Na would score but na or NA would gain no marks. But Sodium sodium or SODIUM are all correct. Unlike most other assessment software, a space at the beginning or end of a word or phrase does not effect the scoring, nor should it! Longer extended Answers where the student types full sentences
we use these a lot to determine depth of knowledge, comprehension, ideas and evidence Each word is individually assessed against key-words, which score points The points accumulate towards the final mark Answers can be added to, ammended and improved This type of answer encourages repeated refinements to maximise the score Extended and Continous answers are often the weakest areas for students - not any more! Multi-choice
The correct answer is rewarded with a blue tick and incorrect receives a red cross, regardless of how many attempts are made. These questions are usually only worth 1 mark The Question's maximum mark decreases by 30% for each attempt, until it is only worth 50% of the original maximum marks. Multiple choice
The correct answer is rewarded with a blue tick and incorrect receives a red cross The Question's maximum mark decreases by 30% for each attempt, until it is only worth 50% of the original maximum marks. This encourages 'right' first time' answering Text Answers
Each answer box is individually marked, ensuring that spelling is correct The correct answer is rewarded with a blue tick and incorrect receives a red cross. Longer extended Answers
Each word has a certain 'weight' (as some key-words are more key than others!) which score points The points accumulate towards the final mark which is calculated as a percentage of the total weight of all the keywords Results
At the end of each Exercise, the student is first warned of any unanswered questions, before marking starts The timer stops and marking occurs when the student confirms the test is to be scored The program then evaluates each question, displaying it's marks alongside The total mark is displayed at the base of the page, with an equivalent grade All questions are then disabled so no alterations can occur! Graphics
Images, data tables and animations are frequently used to both entertain and educate, maintaining the student's interest These can be revealed and changed as the question progresses Reviewing
After the total mark is displayed the student is prompted to review the test to improve their score using the displayed answers This is particularly valuable for extended answers where the expected keywords are shown. Hints
A Hint button is available for all questions which reveals a clue to the answer(s) The actual answer(s) is not given but encourages students to persevere or get onto the right track. Using this button reduces the remaining available marks to 50% Reveal
A Reveal button is available for all questions which reveals the answer(s) A model answer is displayed for text and extended answers This gives instant feedback as to weak areas Using this button freezes the student's mark for just that question
Copy and Pasting
Students cannot just copy text into an answer, the program won't let them! View source code
Students cannot view the source code from within a test We suggest that when installed on a network, students are not allowed to open any MulteLearn file except by navigating from the home page chem.htm Printing
Students cannot Print the model answers for copying into their next attempt. Once the student selects the Print Test option at the end of an Exercise, all the model answers are removed and only their responses are printed. Alteration
All questions are disabled after the Exercise is marked, so no ammendments can be made. Duplication
The students' name is displayed on the Exercise as is their score which cannot be altered or changed by them The date and time are 'timestamped' onto each test so students cannot reuse / submit an old test
Save as a WebPage
A test cannot be saved as a WebPage which stops any temptation to alter a previous Exercise Save as a Text file .txt
Students can save their Results (which include the details as below) as a text file for submission / email attachment / printing Save as a Spreadsheet file .xls
Students can save their Results (which include the details as below) as a spreadsheet for importing into school MIS's so that these results can then be used as part of an assessment
Printing Options
To include as Homework or Study period work, all Exercises can be printed-off after marking (assuming network permissions are granted) or user has a home printer The whole Exercise can be printed, or just selective pages if required The print will show all the answers and responses the student made, including marks, time taken etc. Reprint
There is the option to print the full test again in case of printer or operator error but this must be done before quitting the test Printing model answers
As soon as the Print option is selected, all the correct answers that the student missed, disappear, and do not appear on the print
